Driver rescued with jaws of life, charged with OUI after flipping car near Bangor Mall

By Mario Moretto, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man was charged with operating under the influence after he was rescued from his overturned car early Thanksgiving morning.

Paul Aucoin, 32, was driving on Bangor Mall Boulevard after leaving a nearby restaurant around 12:45 a.m. Thursday, as heavy, wet snow fell during the year’s second major storm event, according the Bangor Police Department officials.

Complete information about the accident was unavailable Thursday afternoon, but Sgt. Larry Webber said Aucoin took a bad turn and struck a coping stone, which caused his 2013 Subaru to turn onto its side.

The vehicle was so badly damaged that rescuers from Bangor Fire Department needed to use the jaws of life to pry the car open and extricate Aucoin. The driver was sent to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Webber said.

Webber said police suspected drugs, alcohol or both contributed to the accident.

The incident was the only serious motor vehicle accident to occur in Bangor during the overnight storm, Webber said.

Woman injured in rollover accident on I-395 exit in Bangor

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A woman was injured Friday afternoon when she lost control of her van on an Interstate 395 ramp, according to police.

The woman, whose name was not immediately available, was believed to be in her mid-60s, State Police Trooper Forrest Simpson said at the scene.

The crash occurred around 2 p.m.

Simpson said the woman was exiting the eastbound lanes of I-395 at the Farm Road ramp when she failed to negotiate a corner, lost control and hit a tree.

The van rolled over onto the passenger side.

Simpson said the vehicle’s air bags deployed and the woman was wearing her safety belt, which likely prevented serious injury.

The trooper said the woman’s injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening, and she was taken from the scene by ambulance to an area hospital, though Simpson was not sure where the driver was being transported.

In addition to state police, Bangor fire and rescue responded to the accident. The Exit 3A ramp was closed for a short period of time while crews cleaned the scene up but has since reopened.

BANGOR, Maine — A pickup truck was destroyed by fire in a fast-food restaurant parking lot Friday, officials said.

The driver, who Bangor Assistant Fire Chief Rick Cheverie did not identify, was heading through the drive-thru window at Wendy’s on Union Street when she saw smoke coming out from under her dashboard.

The driver wisely pulled the truck into a parking space and called 911, Cheverie said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene shortly before 11:30 a.m., and arrived to find the truck engulfed in flames.

Cheverie said the blaze was contained in about five minutes. He said a mechanical failure is likely to blame for the fire.

No other vehicles were ever in any danger and the driver was not injured, Cheverie said. The truck was totaled.

Burst pipe shuts down Central Street business in Bangor

Posted Jan. 04, 2014, at 1:10 p.m.

BANGOR, Maine — A burst water pipe in a downtown business briefly shut down Central Street on Saturday morning, according to the fire department.

The Rock & Art Shop, located at 36 Central St., closed for the day, according to information on its Facebook page.

The Bangor Fire Department was called about 10:10 a.m. to the buildings owned by WBRC Architects and Engineers at 36-44 Central St., according to Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Cyr.

Firefighters found a burst pipe on the second floor that was causing water to flow downstairs into the Rock & Art Shop. Cyr said the pipe was on an outside wall of WBRC’s offices. It most likely froze and burst due to the frigid temperatures.

In addition to damaging merchandise in the shop, it soaked a rug in the offices.

Firefighters were on the scene for less than hour, Cyr said.

Damage estimates were not available Saturday.

With the cold weather, the Bangor Firefighters have been responding to many broken pipe calls. Earlier in the week members responded to a local Hannaford store for a broken sprinkler pipe as well.

BANGOR, Maine — Firefighters responded to an early-morning fire on Hammond Street on Monday.

The building at 378-380 Hammond Street has 10 units, Assistant Chief Anthony Riitano said, and seven were occupied. Everyone in the duplex-style building was displaced, he said.

Capt. John Prentiss of the fire department said the Red Cross is providing the occupants with temporary living accommodations.

One man was still in his apartment when firefighters arrived, Riitano said. While the man was able to walk out, he was sent to a hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation.

Riitano said the state fire marshal’s office determined the fire started due to a refrigerator malfunction.

Riitano said there was “extensive damage” in the apartment where the fire started, as well as fire and smoke damage to other units. He said the building will be empty until a code enforcement officer deems it habitable.

Prentiss said Brewer firefighters were initially called to the scene per the cities’ mutual aid agreement, but were then called to provide station coverage.

Prentiss said the Bangor Fire Department received the fire call at 3:41 a.m. By 7:30, the fire was extinguished and building turned over to its owner.

The building is near where Hammond St. intersects with Seventh Street.

Bangor house under renovation damaged by fire

BANGOR, Maine — A house on the corner of Jefferson and Norfolk streets that was in the process of being renovated was damaged by fire early Thursday.

Bangor fire Capt. Dennis Nadeau said crews were dispatched to the scene shortly after midnight. Nobody is currently living in the two-and-a-half story house.

Smoke was pouring out of all three levels of the house when firefighters arrived, Nadeau said. The fire was mainly contained to the first and second floors, but firefighters had to react quickly to keep it from spreading.

“It was extending up chimneys to the second floor and we had to do quite an overhaul to make sure the fire didn’t spread to the third,” Nadeau said.

The blaze was under control in about an hour, Nadeau said. Crews from Bangor, Brewer, Hampden and Holden combined to put it out.

Nadeau said the first floor sustained significant fire damage while the second floor had heavy water damage, but the home was not demolished, he said.

Bangor fire officials and the state fire marshal’s office are working to figure out a cause, Nadeau said.

Man dead in fire at Winterport church

By Eric Russell, BDN Staff

WINTERPORT, Maine — Firefighters responding to reports of smoke coming from the Calvary Apostolic Church on Thursday morning made a grim discovery — the charred body of an adult male just outside the building.

The unidentified man apparently had tried to escape from the still-burning structure by jumping out a window, officials said.
A car registered to a young man who recently began attending the church was found in the parking lot and he has not been located, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland. The body will undergo an autopsy on Friday at the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta to determine whether it is indeed the missing man.
As firefighters continued to douse flames early Thursday afternoon, Winterport Fire Chief Thomas Doe said the fire’s cause and origin were unknown.
Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office responded within two hours and spent most of the day sorting through the remnants of the church.
Only two walls of the church remained standing late Thursday and they are scheduled to be demolished on Friday when fire marshal investigators return to the scene, McCausland said.
Doe said there was nothing to indicate that the fire was suspicious, but he also said the damage may end up being too extensive to answer some of the investigators’ questions.
The fire started inside the church, on U.S. Route 1A just north of Winterport Village, at about 10 a.m., Doe said. A couple driving by saw smoke coming from the building and called officials.
When the first crews arrived on the scene, Doe said they saw only light smoke. When they approached the front door of the building, though, they saw much darker smoke and orange flames peeking through.
“We elected not to enter,” the chief said. Before long, the expansive roof collapsed and firefighters focused on containing the flames rather than saving the structure.
By 11 a.m., numerous witnesses and members of the church had gathered. The heat from the fire could be felt from the street. Many wore looks of concern. Few wanted to talk about what had happened.
In addition to Winterport, firefighters responded from neighboring communities as far away as Bangor and Stockton Springs. Thick black smoke mixed with fog through the late morning and early afternoon hours and slowed traffic along busy Route 1A.

BIA plans mock mass disaster Saturday

By Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN Staff
BANGOR, Maine — A military transport carrying civilians will crash and burn Saturday morning in a mock exercise to see how emergency responders in the area handle a full-scale mass casualty incident.
“We’ll start with an in-flight emergency, probably hydraulic failure or something like that,” Assistant Bangor Fire Chief Vance Tripp, a coordinator of the exercise, said Tuesday.
Then the plane will “crash” at the end of Bangor International Airport near the Ground Round at around 8:30 a.m., where an old L-1011 airliner fuselage will be set ablaze.
“The fire will indicate the crash,” Vance said. “At that point, we are going to put the fire out with the equipment that would normally do that.”
Saturday’s disaster exercise drill is held every three years and is mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration to test emergency response procedures at BIA, Risteen H. Masters Bahr,  BIA’s marketing manager, said last week in an email.
The drill will put into motion the airport’s disaster plan, which draws on area firefighters, ambulance crews, police and other law enforcement, as well as military personnel from the Maine Air National Guard and others, Tom Robertson, director of the Penobscot County Emergency Management Agency, said Tuesday.
Residents are being given advance warning of the exercise so they know not to call 911, Tripp said. The exercise is an opportunity to demonstrate the ability of participating agencies to command and control a mass disaster, he said.
Once the real fire is out, emergency crews from all over the region will tend to the walking wounded, who each will have a “scenario to play out,” Tripp said.
Fifty or 60 of the 100 or so “injured” are volunteers from the Penobscot Job Corps, Robertson said.
“The casualties will be on the ground moaning and groaning,” he said.
Seven area ambulances will take the injured to area hospitals, he said. Eastern Maine Medical Center, St. Joseph Hospital, Acadia, Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center and Penobscot Community Health Care are participating.
The Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross will set up a family center in the transit lounge in the terminal at BIA for “family members who witnessed the disaster,” Tripp said.
The entire exercise is scheduled to end just after noon.
“The main thing is getting the numerous agencies involved to play together,” Tripp said. “It makes them a little closer-knit and you can get more accomplished” if there ever is a real mass-casualty emergency.
“It’s a good opportunity for training,” Tripp said. “It tests everybody’s systems.”

Motorcyclist injured in collision with truck on Broadway

By Jamison Cocklin, Special to the BDN

BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center on Friday after the motorcycle he was driving collided with another vehicle on Broadway, according to police.

Bangor police Sgt. Larry Weber said Jason Wagner, 20, crashed his 2008 Kawasaki into a truck being driven by Robert Watson, 56, of Hermon. Watson was not injured, according to Weber.
The incident occurred when Wagner allegedly failed to realize that the 2008 GMC pickup truck Watson was driving was making a left turn onto Earl Drive from Broadway.
Weber said the truck was moving very slowly through the turn and the driver did not notice Wagner on the motorcycle, which hit the turning vehicle’s passenger side.
According to Lt. Robert Bilotta of the Bangor Fire Department, paramedics from Capital Ambulance Service tended to Wagner in the street where he fell off the bike after the accident.  Bilotta said Wagner’s injuries were not life-threatening.
The accident occurred in a 25 mph zone and speed was not considered a factor in the crash, according to Weber. Police are expected to reconstruct the accident in order to determine the cause.
Bilotta said the truck had only minor “dents and dings,” but the motorcycle Wagner was driving had “extensive damage.” Officials did not have estimates on the damage.
“Motorcycles don’t fare too well against larger vehicles in any crash, no matter what,” Bilotta said.
Reports on the incident indicated that traffic was largely unaffected, according to Weber.

Fire does heavy damage at senior housing project in Bangor

By Nok-Noi Ricker
BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — The State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Bangor Police Department’s criminal investigation division and the Bangor Fire Department are investigating a fire at a senior housing construction site on Harlow Street that caused significant damage, officials say.

Damage is estimated at several hundreds of thousands of dollars, “mostly due to smoke and heat damage,” Assistant Bangor Fire Chief Rick Cheverie said Thursday morning.

The fire was reported at around 6 a.m. Thursday and occurred in the rear of the second floor of the three-story building, he said. The new housing development is located at 315 Harlow St., next to Northern Kingdom Music.

Newport-based Bowman Constructors is the general contractor of the 55-unit senior housing apartment complex, which is an $11 million project “being paid for with federal funding, including federal stimulus money,” the company’s website states.

The low-income housing will be for those age 62 or older who have incomes of less than $25,920. The facility will be operated by Volunteers of America Northern New England, which is based in Brunswick.

Glenn Michaels, spokesman for Volunteers of America, said the original plan was to take ownership from Bowman and open the facility sometime in January. Whether the opening will be delayed is not known,he said.

Assistant State Fire Marshal Joe Thomas said late Thursday morning that two fire investigators from the fire marshal’s office are investigating the blaze.

“We’re still at the scene and we probably will be for the rest of the day,” he said, describing the damage as “significant.”

Smoldering cigarette causes fire in Bangor

By Nok-Noi Ricker BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — Someone who lives at 66 Sidney St. apparently flicked a still burning cigarette onto a window support Wednesday morning and it caught the house on fire, Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Cyr said.

“Apparently it landed on a lintel over a window,” he said of the cigarette. “It smoldered there for quite some time and eventually made it into the walls.”

The official cause is “improper disposal of smoking materials,” Cyr said.

Three people live in the home, and one called for help at 6:44 a.m.

“They smelled smoke and they started looking on the inside for the smoke, and they went outside and saw the fire on the outside,” Cyr said.

Fire was visible when firefighters arrived, and “the homeowner’s son had a garden hose that pretty much kept the fire on the outside at bay,” he said.

Once firefighters got inside, “there was no visible fire,” Cyr said. “But once they opened up the ceiling and the walls, they found a good amount of fire.”

Firefighters extinguished the fire in the walls and ceiling of the first floor and in the walls of the second floor. Flames did not reach the third-floor attic, Cyr said.

“There was a lot of digging to make sure the fire had not extended beyond the floor and in the walls,” he said. “We dig until we can’t find any more.”

There was no damage estimate for the fire, Cyr said.

Bangor Fire Department brought three fire engines, three rescue vehicles and the ladder truck to the blaze. Crews left at around 10:15 a.m. and no injuries were reported among fire personnel or the residents, Cyr said.

Finson Road fire destroys trailer

By Nok-Noi Ricker
BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A fire raged Tuesday afternoon through a home in the Cedar Falls trailer park on Finson Road, leaving the metal walls standing but destroying everything inside, Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Cyr said.

Engine 6 arrived at the mobile home, located five units down from the trailer park’s entrance, just after 1 p.m. and the fire was burning strongly, he said.

“They did report fire showing through the roof,” Cyr said. “They did good to knock down the fire” within a few minutes.

No one was home when the fire broke out and no injuries were reported in extinguishing it, he said.

Yellow fire hose was run from the corner of Blue Hill East and Finson Road, across Finson and into the trailer park, temporarily closing Finson Road.

The roadway was reopened at around 2 p.m.

Fire at Bangor home ruled an arson

By Dawn Gagnon
BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A joint investigation into the fire that destroyed a mobile home in the Cedar Falls Trailer Park has determined that the fire’s cause was arson, Sgt. Tim York of the State Fire Marshal’s Office said Wednesday .

Though he declined to discuss specifics about the investigation, he did say that the incident remains under investigation by state officials and personnel from the Bangor Fire Department and the Bangor Police Department.

Tuesday’s fire, which began about 1 p.m., demolished the mobile home’s entire interior, leaving only the metal walls standing.

A resident of the Cedar Falls park, located off Finson Road, said Tuesday that he believed the occupants of the destroyed mobile home were in the process of moving out. He said he noticed a truck being used to move items over the last two or three days.

No one was home when the fire broke out and no injuries were reported in extinguishing it, Bangor Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Cyr said Tuesday.

Because fire crews had to run 900 feet of hose to the fire scene from the nearest hydrant, Finson Road had to be closed for about an hour, Cyr said.

Man hurt in fall off Lover's Leap in Bangor

By Dawn Gagnon
BDN Staff

BANGOR - A man walking along a path at Lover's Leap became the focus of a rescue operation by city firefighters Tuesday evening after he fell an estimated 20 feet and injured himself.

The man, who was described as being in his mid- to late 20s but whose name, age and hometown weren't immediately available, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment of head injuries and cuts to his arms and legs, Assistant Fire Chief Rick Cheverie said. No further information about his medical condition was available Tuesday night.

Cheverie said that firefighters were called to Lover's Leap, an area off Valley Avenue that has a steep cliff overlooking the Kenduskeag Stream, about 6:30 p.m.

"It appears that he lost his footing," Cheverie said. He said rescuers found the injured man after they were flagged down from across the stream by his girlfriend.

"We couldn't have seen him from the opposite bank, which is where we came in," he said.

Though the rescue operation did not require climbing, it did require that firefighters cross the stream to get to the man, put him onto a litter and stabilize him before carrying him back across the stream to a waiting ambulance, Cheverie said.

Water levels at this time of year are relatively low, ranging from ankle-deep to roughly knee-keep, or "just deep enough to get over the firefighters' boots, he said.

According to the Maine Memory Network, a website of the Maine Historical Society, Bangor's Lover's Leap "commemorates a young Native American couple who supposedly jumped to their deaths in the stream after being refused permission to wed."

Fire displaces tenants of Essex Street apartment building

By Dawn Gagnon
BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — Investigators were working Friday night to determine the cause of a fire that displaced the tenants of a seven-unit apartment building at 149-151 Essex St.

Assistant Chief Darrell Cyr of the Bangor Fire Department said the fire began at about 4 p.m. in a bedroom on the second floor of the building and had started to work its way up the exterior to the third floor when firefighters entered the building and knocked it down.

“The guys did an awesome job,” Cyr said, adding that no tenants or firefighters were injured.

Cyr said that fire damage was limited to the apartment in which the fire began and that there was water damage in the apartment directly under it.

The 2½-story building, owned by Paul Newman, was evacuated and residents were not allowed to stay in their apartments Friday night.

Though he did not know the total number of tenants displaced, Cyr said that all but six or seven tenants were staying with friends and family. The Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross has been asked to make housing arrangements for those without a place to stay.

Cyr said that investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bangor Police Department were called in to help pinpoint the fire’s cause but he stopped short of calling the fire suspicious.

“We’re just crossing our t’s and dotting our i’s,” he said.

Cyr said that 19 Bangor firefighters from all three stations turned out and that Brewer and Hampden firefighters provided station coverage until the fire was extinguished.

A dollar estimate for damage resulting from the fire was not immediately available Friday. Cyr said he believed the building was insured.

Bangor firefighters rescue bridge jumper

By Dawn Gagnon
BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — Bangor firefighters rescued a man late Friday night who jumped from the Penobscot Bridge into the Penobscot River.

The man, whose name and age were not available, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, Assistant Chief Rick Cheverie of the Bangor Fire Department said.

He had been in the water for nearly 20 minutes before city firefighters found him using high-powered lights, binoculars and a thermal imaging camera.

Firefighters used a rescue boat they keep docked at Bangor Waterfront to pick him up. The man was conscious when he was found, Cheverie said.

“It’s always good when we have a success like this,” he said.

According to Cheverie, firefighters and police were called to the waterfront at 10:33 p.m. — 10 minutes after low tide — after a person who was on the bridge reported that a man had stripped off his outer clothes and jumped into the river.

Bangor police Sgt. Bob Bishop said it was not yet clear why the man jumped. Bishop estimated the distance from the bridge to the surface of the river at about 35 feet.

“He’s lucky to be alive,” Bishop said.

Electrical fire burns Poplar Street home

From Bangor Daily News

By Dawn Gagnon
BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — An electrical malfunction was cited as the cause of a Friday morning fire that caused thousands of dollars in damage to a Poplar Street home.

The fire was reported about 10:20 a.m. by a passerby who saw dark smoke coming up around the eaves of the house, located at 67 Poplar St., said Assistant Chief Vance Tripp of the Bangor Fire Department.

“The fire actually started in the ceiling in a hallway on the first floor,” Tripp said.

An electrical wire supplying power to a ceiling fixture apparently overheated, sparking a fire that burned up through the floor of the house’s second story, Tripp said.

The fire also caused significant damage to rooms on the backside of the house, he said, estimating fire, smoke and water damage to the building and some of its contents at around $50,000.

The homeowners, Howard and Norma Berg, were away when the fire broke out, Tripp said. He said no firefighters were injured in connection with the fire.

BANGOR, Maine — A fire that began in a trash container behind a Fern Street home was extinguished before it caused major damage, an official with the Bangor Fire Department said Wednesday.

Assistant Chief Darrell Cyr said the fire was at the Bruce Grant residence.

Cyr said that after the fire started, it traveled up one side of the building, burning some of the siding, part of a railing and a portion of the floor of a porch.

Firefighters put the fire out within minutes of their arrival, preventing its spread to the inside of the building, he said.

No one was injured in connection with the fire, Cyr said. He said that a dollar estimate for the damage was not available Wednesday evening. It also was not clear if the building was insured.

Bangor home damaged by fire

By Dawn Gagnon
BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A fire of unknown cause Thursday afternoon resulted in significant fire and smoke damage to a single-family home at 92 Second St.

The owners, Bruce and Christina Babin, were not at home when the fire began about 2 p.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Cyr of the Bangor Fire Department.

The family’s small dog Seamus, however, was home, Cyr said.

Shortly after knocking down the fire, firefighters found Seamus inside.

“He was in a crate on the second floor,” he said.

The dog appeared to be in good condition when firefighters brought him outside to Bruce Babin, who came home after learning about the fire.

Cyr said Thursday that firefighters had not yet determined what caused the fire but that it appears to have started in an extension at the back of the two-story house, which abuts Second Street Park.

The extension had significant fire damage and the rest of the house had heavy smoke damage, Cyr said.

A dollar estimate for the damage was not immediately available Thursday. Cyr said he did not yet know whether the house was insured.

Fire destroys Glenburn home

By Dawn Gagnon
BDN Staff

GLENBURN, Maine — A small one-story home was destroyed Thursday in a fire of unknown origin.

The house at 317 Hudson Road was in flames by the time firefighters arrived about 3:30 p.m., Glenburn Fire Capt. Gene Hamm said at the scene. He said the State Fire Marshal’s Office would be asked to help determine the cause.

According to Hamm, no one was home when the fire was reported by a passer-by about 3:30 p.m.

Hamm said he didn’t know the owner’s name or whether the house was insured. He said the Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross had been called to provide assistance.

Glenburn firefighters were joined at the scene by their counterparts from Bangor, Corinth and Hudson, while crews from Charleston remained on standby, Hamm said. No one was injured while fighting the fire, he said.

Though Hamm said Thursday’s cold conditions had not posed any significant challenges for fire crews, the frigid air did cause water used to extinguish the blaze to freeze on a section of Hudson Road close to the fire, as well as on the long dirt driveway leading to the burning house. The ice made walking treacherous.

Bangor Auditorium fire sends worker to hospital

By Dawn Gagnon
BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A small fire Wednesday night in the boiler room at the Bangor Auditorium sent one Bass Park employee to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation symptoms, a Fire Department official said.

Assistant Fire Chief Rick Cheverie said he was unable to disclose the employee’s name, citing federal confidentiality rules. Cheverie said late Wednesday that he had not yet been able to confirm where the worker was taken, but believed it was St. Joseph Hospital.

Cheverie said the fire was reported at 9:23 p.m. and that crews from the department’s Central Station and Station 5 both went to the scene. He said that when firefighters arrived, they found light smoke in the building, which grew thicker as they neared the boiler room, where they found a cardboard box and a 5-gallon plastic bucket containing tools and parts on fire.

The fire’s cause, he said, is under investigation.

“The boiler was not affected,” Cheverie said, adding that some electrical components near the box and bucket were burned. He estimated damage at about $500.

Cheverie said the fire was extinguished within minutes, but firefighters remained at the auditorium for about an hour to ventilate smoke from the building’s main lobby and nearby hallways.

Engine and Rescue 5 Co.’s answered the call from Old Town, for a residential fire. Station 5 Co.’s were immediately assigned as the RIT team for this working fire. As additional Co’s arrived, Lt. VanPeursem, with Rescue 5, were rotated in for overhaul on the first floor.

First in reports had heavy fire in the attic, second floor and back half of the first floor. Crews initially made interior attacks from the first floor, but the tide turner came from Orono’s Tower. With crews pulled from the building, Tower 245 beat the snot out of it, once again giving the guys a shot at the inside. Interior crews were quick and methodical with their final blows to the fire.

Our brothers and sisters on the Old Town and Orono departments once again did a stand up job knocking this one in the teeth.

Kudos to the guys on our eastern border, sweet job.

Fire damages Bangor building

By Dawn Gagnon

BANGOR, Maine — An outdoor smoker-cooker was cited as the cause of a fire Tuesday that damaged the building at the corner of Court and Ohio streets that houses Court Street Market and five apartment units, including one occupied by the building’s owner, Richard Van Syckle.

Formerly known as Young’s Market, the convenience store has been a neighborhood fixture for several generations.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bostock, the fire at 181 Court St., was reported about 4:30 p.m. and everyone inside got out safely, including several pets.

Bostock and Capt. Matt Costello said that the fire began after an outdoor smoker-cooker placed on a ground-level deck at the back of the building ignited nearby combustible materials, including the siding and portions of the deck.

Costello said the fire shattered the glass of a sliding glass door and had started to extend into a kitchen before it was extinguished.

Though parts of the back side of the building had smoke damage, the apartments remain habitable and the store is open for business, he said.

“Another couple of minutes it could have been a different story,” Costello said.

A Boston firefighter who happened by the fire scene credited quick response by more than a dozen Bangor firefighters for preventing the fire from spreading.

“These guys did a great job,” said Boston fire Lt. John Radley, who was visiting friends in Bangor on Wednesday. “All it takes is an extra minute or two and the whole thing’s over,” he said, pointing out where the flames nearly ignited the eaves along the building’s rear.

“Without [quick] response time and [adequate] manpower, you can’t do a thing,” he said.

Among those who helped alert the building’s occupants about the fire was 2½-year-old Michael Hatch.

“He was sitting on his potty pooping, when he said, ‘Mama, fire,’” the boy’s mother, Crystal Hatch said. Hatch, who lives two buildings down from the Court Street Market, said she sent her husband, Josh, running to alert those inside.

Though Van Syckle declined to comment at the scene, a small crowd of people from the neighborhood who gathered at the scene said he acquired the building from the former owner, Scott Leadbetter, and had spent more than a year refurbishing it.

They noted that Tuesday’s fire was the second to hit the building in the last three years.

In March 2006, an electrical fire inside the ceiling of what was then Young’s Market resulted in heavy damage, forcing the market to close and leaving the tenants homeless. The building housed eight rental apartments at the time.

Garage fire melts siding on nearby homes

BREWER, Maine — A fire that started in a Wilson Street garage grew so fast and burned so hot Thursday that it destroyed three vehicles and melted siding on three nearby homes, fire officials said.

No one was injured as a result of the fire, which Brewer Fire Chief Rick Bronson said began about 6 p.m.

“We did search to make sure everyone was OK, but everyone already was out when we got there,” said Lt. Dennis Tinkham of the Brewer Fire Department.

According to Tinkham, the fire began while Mark Lloyd of Brewer and a friend were working on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle in a garage at 228 Wilson St.

The two had just removed the bike’s gas tank when they noticed some gasoline had spilled. Though they shut off an LP gas heater inside the two-story garage, the heater retained enough residual heat to ignite gasoline vapors, Tinkham said.

“The fire grew very, very rapidly and it burned very hot,” Tinkham said, adding that the garage and houses were located in a compact neighborhood.

He said a dollar estimate for fire-related damage was not immediately available.

The fire destroyed, in addition to the garage and its contents, including the motorcycle, a pickup truck and an automobile parked nearby. It melted siding on three adjacent homes, Tinkham said.

Sections of siding were burned on the houses at 228 Wilson St., 230 Wilson St. and 127 Parker St., Tinkham said. There also was some fire damage to the rear of the house at 228 Wilson, which is occupied by Lloyd and his wife and his wife’s grandparents Ken and Doris Doak, owners of the demolished pickup and car.

All three homes remain habitable, Tinkham said.

Brewer fire crews were assisted by firefighters from Bangor and Eddington. (Engine 1 D Crew)

The fire resulted in the closure of a section of Wilson Street for nearly two hours.

Traffic temporarily was rerouted through residential side streets.

BANGOR - In a strange sequence of events Monday, Kurt Smith, owner of Essex Stud Arabians boarding and breeding facility, discovered that 2-month-old foal Matinicus Rock had fallen into a 12-foot-deep abandoned well.

No, Lassie didn’t come running to inform him of the accident — but close.

Smith was working in the yard around 10:30 a.m. when his border collie, Molly, came running and barking.

"She baby-sits the baby horse and looks right after her," Smith said.

The foal’s mother, Czarah, was in the field whinnying and obviously upset, Smith said.

When he went to see what was wrong, Smith couldn’t find the foal, whose nickname is Mati.

"I heard the baby screaming, but I couldn’t find her," he said. "When I looked down, I just was amazed."

Smith ran to the house and called the Bangor Fire Department. When firefighters arrived with a ladder, he went down into the well, slid ropes around Mati’s front legs and hindquarters and was able to pull her out of the well, "no worse for the wear," he said.

If a horse falling in a well isn’t odd enough, Smith and his wife, Denise Mitchell, had watched the news earlier that morning which aired a story about "Baby Jessica" who was rescued after she fell into a well nearly 20 years ago in Texas.

"Then two hours later we had baby Mati," Smith said. "It was déjà vu."

Mati’s owner, Lisa Kelly, arrived at the farm just as Smith and others were beginning to check the filly and make sure she was OK.

"It was unbelievable how it unfolded," Kelly said Tuesday. "I was taking an early lunch, which was just totally out of the clear blue."

Kelly is quite attached to her new baby — Mati is her first foal — and checks on her every afternoon.

When Kelly arrived, she saw the firetruck and noticed commotion as people walked into the side of the arena and toward the stable area.

"I followed everybody and I walked in, and [Smith] was covered, I mean from head to toe, just covered in muck," Kelly said.

She asked what happened and Smith told her Mati had fallen into the well and they’d just rescued her.

"She was walking, which was a big plus," Kelly said. "No hoofs, no horse. She could have died in so many ways."

Mati weighs about 250 pounds and was small enough to fall down the abandoned well that was about 5 feet wide and 12 feet deep. The artesian well had been covered with boards, but the wood had begun to deteriorate. The well shaft was filled in with gravel Tuesday to prevent any future incidents.

At the bottom of the well was 1 to 2 feet of water that was very cold, and Mati was shivering and in shock.

Otherwise, the filly with the white heart centered on her forehead was fine. Two of her legs are still a little swollen, but Kelly said it’s nothing time won’t fix.

"Obviously, I can’t sell her because I’ve gotten myself a little too attached to her for right now," Kelly said. "This is my first baby. She just took my heart. I can’t let her go."

BANGOR, Maine — A natural gas leak early Wednesday evening prompted city fire and police officials to temporarily block off a section of Main Street near the Hollywood Slots construction site.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bostock, construction workers struck an 8-inch natural gas line while digging on the site.

The section of Main Street that runs from Buck Street to the Interstate 395 exit ramp was closed from about 5:40 p.m. to shortly after 6 p.m., Bostock said.

Neighborhood traffic briefly was rerouted through Bass Park, located across Main Street from the work site.

Bangor Gas Co. crews were called in to shut the line down until it could be repaired, either late Wednesday or early today.

The rupture occurred on the discontinued section of Dutton Street that runs between the Hollywood Slots construction site and the neighboring Best Inn and Geaghan’s Restaurant and Pub, Bostock said.

A strong odor of natural gas could be detected from at least a block away from the leak. As a safety precaution, employees and guests of the inn and pub were told to stay inside the building and not to smoke or start their cars until the line was shut off, Bostock said.

Wednesday’s leak was the second at the construction site in a month. On Sept. 7, construction workers struck a 6-inch natural gas line.

Neither incident resulted in injury, Bostock said.

As required by law, Bangor Gas Co. reported the September incident to the Maine Public Utilities Commission, which was expected to investigate to determine who was at fault and whether penalties might be assessed. The PUC could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

A group of severe thunderstorms kept Station 6 busy. They  responded to 2 mutual aid working fires in Hermon (engine, tanker and rescue 6) within 4 hours. Below is part of an article from the Bangor Daily News.

Thunderstorms cool the heat, but ignite several fires

While most people wished for a summer shower to extinguish Wednesday’s heat and humidity, the late afternoon thunderstorms ignited several house and grass fires in parts of the state.

A Hermon home and barn were destroyed after lightning struck the buildings at 7 Phillips Lane, just off Annis Road, around 4 p.m. The barn and the ell, attaching the barn to the home, were burned to the ground, said Lt. Kelli Leighton of the Hermon Fire Department. The back part of the home was destroyed and the front would probably be a total loss, she said.

Six fire departments from neighboring communities and the Maine Air National Guard base in Bangor assisted the Hermon department in fighting the blaze, she said. Despite the heat, no firefighters were injured fighting the blaze, Leighton said, but they had to guard against heat exhaustion.

"It’s so hot that we need a long time to recover," she said. The firefighters drank a lot of water and took turns battling the fire.

Lightning shot through the window of a Brewer home at around 5:45 p.m., setting a bed on fire in a family playroom, said Lt. Robbie Wildes of the Brewer Fire Department.

The lightning hit the 2½-story home at 34 Getchell St., and while Veronica Spaight was in the home at the time, with her two daughters, a 6-year-old and 6-month-old, nobody was hurt. Edward Spaight said he was on his way home from work when he noticed the smoke and called his wife.

"I said, ‘It looks like there is a fire in the area,’ and she said, ‘Yeah, it’s our house,’" Spaight, 37, said. "I ran right home."

Damage to the first floor was considerable, while the second floor had mainly smoke and water damage, Wildes said.

Several other structure and grass fires were reported late Wednesday afternoon in Penobscot County.

Severe thunderstorm warnings and watches for every county in the state except Aroostook alerted residents to the potential for heavy rains, large hail, damaging winds and frequent lightning between the hours of about 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday.
