BANGOR, Maine — A 63-year-old woman was injured in a rollover accident late Monday afternoon after swerving to avoid a collision with a vehicle on Interstate 95, police said.
According to Trooper Christopher Hashey of the Maine State Police, the accident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. in the southbound travel lanes, near mile marker 180. Bonnie Gagne of Carmel lost control of her late model silver sedan in an attempt to avoid striking a green sedan that cut into her traveling lane.
Gagne’s vehicle went into a spin and left the highway, before rolling and coming to a rest on its side with the front end pointing in the opposite traveling direction, Hashey said.
The trooper said several passersby stopped to help prop her car up to prevent it from rolling further until Bangor firefighters and emergency rescue personnel arrived. The accident resulted in a temporary traffic backup in the southbound lanes, but the traffic flow returned to normal after Gagne’s vehicle was hauled away by a tow truck.
Bangor firefighters were able to extricate Gagne from the wreckage, and she was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment of injuries she suffered in the crash, Hashey said.
Information about Gagne’s medical condition was not immediately available.
