Houlton woman hits tree in single-car crash

BANGOR, Maine — Extrication equipment was used by Bangor firefighters Monday morning to get a Houlton woman out of her car, which was crushed when she left the roadway and hit a tree.

Police are not sure why Opal Leblond, 66, of Houlton crashed her 2008 Chevy Impala on Union Street just after crossing the Bangor-Hermon town line.

“The vehicle was travelling inbound at about 10:44 a.m. and basically drifted off the road and hit a tree,” Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

Leblond was trapped inside the vehicle, which in addition to hitting the tree, also damaged a street sign.

“She was extricated by the Jaws of Life and taken to a local hospital” with injuries that were not life-threatening, Edwards said.

Bangor firefighters cut off the roof of the car and pried open the door to free Leblond, who was the only person involved in the single-vehicle crash.

She was not wearing a seat belt, Edwards said.

Leblond was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center. An EMMC official said Monday night that she was in good condition.

After the crash, the roadway was closed while emergency crews worked to free the Houlton woman. It was reopened about an hour later after a wrecker removed the heavily damaged vehicle. As the wrecker removed the car, burgundy-colored fuzzy dice could be seen hanging from the front mirror.
