Fire crew to collect donations for MDA

BANGOR, Maine — Firefighters hope the crowds heading to the Bangor Mall area today for some Black Friday shopping action will bring a little extra cash to contribute to their Fill-the-Boot fundraising campaign.

The fundraiser, during which passers-by are encouraged to drop cash into firefighters’ boots, will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the intersection of Hogan Road and Bangor Mall Boulevard.

All proceeds will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a charity the firefighters have supported for more than 15 years.

Assistant Chief Vance Tripp, who has participated in the fundraiser in the past, said firefighters have topped $3,000 at a time through the fundraiser.

Firefighter Philip Hamm said Thursday that for the past several years, the Bangor Fire Department has been the MDA’s top fundraiser among the state’s professional fire departments. He said the money raised in Bangor goes to MDA but stays in Maine.

Hamm said Lewiston and Auburn firefighters joined forces last year in an attempt to outdo the Bangor firefighters and still did not succeed.

Last year, Bangor raised more than $18,000 in Fill-the-Boot events during the holiday season as well as the American Folk Festival.

This year, he said, firefighters passed the boot during the Waterfront Concert Series.

Hamm said Bangor firefighters will conduct at least one more Fill-the-Boot event this calendar year, likely on the Saturday before Christmas
